Over the years, new printing processes have made possible the

printing of many unusual stamps - stamps printed on all

sorts of foil, metal, material, fabric, 3-D stamps, holograms,

lenticular (movement) stamps and others.

Because they are so philatelic, I purposely do not show many stamps

issued by Shajah, Fujeira, Manama, Ajman and Ras Al Khaima.

Printed on cork

On Wednesday 26th December 2007, the world’s first stamp made entirely from cork was issued in Portugal. Designed by the Portuguese engraver Joao Machado, it is made from wafer-thin “paper cork”, a thickness of just 0.35mm, with a print run of 230,000. Every stamp is unique due to the cellular nature of cork.

Austria 2008 - Type 1

A small number of post offices had for sale on only the very first day

of issue the soccer ball stamp printed on polymer in blocks with

margins around the stamps as shown - after the first day, for

some reason these were withdrawn from sale and all post offices

from then on only sold the stamps as singles without the margins

In contrast to stamps printed on paper, the design of this stamp is embroidered using a polyester thread on a high-quality, satin-weave polyester base. The embroidery process produces a true three-dimensional stamp. Bischoff Textil AG, who manufactured the stamp, had the thread for the whole run specially made and dyed in two tones of blue used for the design. The material made was used exclusively for the manufacture of the stamp. To produce the stamps the satin was cut into sheets 9.4 m long. Two of the Satin base were mounted on the 10 m wide SAURER Pentamat (2040) embroidery machine. 340 stamps were embroidered across the width of the satin at a speed of over 200 revolutions per minute (the needle moving forwards and then backwards). The stamps were produced row by row until a total of 20 rows had been embroidered. The light blue background was created first and then a second needle added the dark blue text, the value and the border. A total of 340 needles worked simultaneously across a width of 9.3 m. Since embroidery machines inevitably 'pull' the base material slightly the latter was stretched taut and the stamps were kept in the correct position with clips. Once the embroidery was finished all the linking threads were mechanically removed. As in the case of any piece of embroidery, minimal differences occurred owing to the number of different manufacturing processes involved. This is quite common in textile technology and means that each stamp is in fact totally unique. Almost no errors occurred thanks to continuous supervision by Bischoff's staff. Unlike normal postage stamps, small differences in appearance among the embroidery stamps cannot be termed faults or give rise to different varieties. Once this stage was complete, the rows of stamps were checked and the self-adhesive backing was added in a series of processes using a technique developed specially for this stamp. Finally, the individual stamps were electronically cut.

This section shows stamps printed on paper, but

with some sort of material (wood, metal, gold, silver

glitter, crystal, clay, rock etc) affixed or embedded

Some also have "stuff" attached by way of thermography

which is a printing process where powder or sand is

applied to the paper, and sticks to the inked section while

the rest is removed by suction. The sheet then passes

under heat which fuses the powder or sand with the ink

The meteorite is composed of olivine, a mineral chemically defined as magnesium iron silicate. The stamp is a unique collaboration between Kessels Kramer advertising agency, director Anton Corbijn and Dutch actress Carice van Houten. It shows Van Houten in front of a typical Dutch windmill. Depending on the angle from which the stamp is viewed, an animation appears where Van Houten bites down on a man's middle finger. Corbijn shot 120 frames of film of which 30 are used. The finger biting was a playful, spontaneous interaction that made it to the final cut. 350,000 stamps were printed

Self-adhesive and when peeled off, is extremely

thin and totally transparent in the areas where

there is no design

First trial - North Korea catalogue #4505-A,B(a)

In the first trial of DVD stamps for the 2008 Beijing

Olympics, a small number had the stamp section

printed first and then STUCK on the disks. The packet

has the wording "The First Digital Versatile Disk

Stamp of the World" and the disks were 6 sided

Second trial - North Korea catalogue #4505-A,B(c)

In the second trial, the disks were round and the

stamp sections were PRINTED on the disks.

The wording on the packet is now different - it

reads "The first Compact Disc video stamp of the

world"

After the above two trials, it was decided to issue

six sided stamps with the labels printed on the disks.

The packet is the same as used for trial no. 2
